In 1798, Samuel Taylor Coleridge penned his famous phrase “Water, Water, Everywhere. Nor Any Drop To Drink” in his poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Little did he know how applicable his words would be in describing our planet over 220 years later.
Indeed, we have billions and billions of gallons of water on earth, but it is so contaminated that we can drink very little of it without significant purification.
THE PROBLEMS
I. “WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE” (Quantity)
Our planet is blessed with a phenomenal amount of water. We have so much water that there are about 5 Billion gallons for every man, woman and child on earth! Consider:
- There are over 332 Million cubic miles of water on Earth.
- 71% of the Earth’s surface is salt water.
- Almost 140 Million surface square miles of salt water encircle the globe.
- 97.5% of all water in the world is salt water…undrinkable without being desalinated.
The following chart puts the world’s water picture into perspective. Understanding this chart helps us understand why getting clean drinking water is such a huge problem. It helps us realize how RARE and PRECIOUS the blessing of clean Fresh Water is to all planet peoples.

The above WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE Chart is of approximate data collected by the US Geological Survey. It shows the location percentage of the Earth’s 332,000,000 cubic miles of water.
The information might be viewed less for its preciseness and more for the proportional relationships among the various cells. Such as:
- The overwhelming magnitude of Salt Water over Fresh Water…97.5% vs. 2.5%!
- Surface Water (the easiest access water source for most people) is a drop in the proverbial bucket compared with Salt Water
- Ground Water is over 120 times more plentiful than Surface Water…thus, all the millions of water wells around the world
- Surprisingly, there is more Salt Water than Fresh Water in our Ground Water.
- When Salt Water freezes, its ice becomes Fresh Water Ice. Therefore, all the Ice is Fresh Water and totals a bit more in abundance than all the other combined non-ocean waters on Earth. Amazing!
“WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE” QUANTITY SUMMARY
The basic problems with water quantity/water, water, everywhere:
- Even though the Earth has plenty of water, 97.5% of it is salt water and is not readily drinkable.
- Only 2.5% of world water is fresh water which could be readily drinkable if it were accessible and unpolluted.
- Over half of the fresh water is locked in icecaps, glaciers and permafrost…not accessible to most people.
- Ground water must be discovered, have a well/borehole drilled, have a pump installed and maintained, and then continually be quality tested because many, many wells now produce polluted water.
- A tiny fraction of the world’s water is surface water like lakes and streams. It is the most accessible to most people, but suffers from significant pollution by a very wide array of hazardous contaminants.
- Even with all this water, we still have about 845 Million people (12% of world population) without local, safely managed water sources.
The world has plenty of water. The problems are location and composition…where the fresh or salt water is.
II. “NOR ANY DROP TO DRINK” (Quality)
Coleridge was writing about sailing the ocean and being frustrated by having all that water around and not being able to drink it.
220 years later, the world’s peoples are frustrated not only because they can’t drink the 97.5% salt water, but neither can they drink safely from the 2.5% fresh water because of its high probability of being polluted.
SALT WATER POLLUTION
- Seawater averages about 3.5% salinity, meaning it contains about 220 times more salt than fresh water.
- Scientists estimate that there could be 5 Million to 10 Million different kinds of bacteria in our oceans.
- It is estimated that over 80% of the world’s wastewater is mostly untreated and dumped back into the environment, polluting our lakes, streams and oceans.
- Sewage entering the ocean can pollute wide areas with pathogenic viruses, bacteria and protozoans which can cause e coli, giardia, cholera, hepatitis A, hepatitis E, etc.
- In addition to pathogens, the seawater can be contaminated by at least 80 heavy metals, as well as micro–plastic particles, toxic chemicals, animal waste, garbage, etc.
FRESH WATER POLLUTION
Unfortunately, most of the problems of Seawater Pollution also apply to Fresh Water Pollution.
Since fresh water for drinking is more accessible to more of the human population than is salt water, its pollution impact is much wider with larger consequences.
- WHO estimates over 3.5 Million people die each year from water-related diseases.
- A recent study indicates that a toxic cocktail of chemical pollutants in US drinking water could result in more than 100,000 cancer cases.
- Approximately 40% of the lakes in America are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life or swimming.
- More than 70% of Chinese rivers and lakes are polluted and almost half may contain water that is unfit for human consumption or contact.
- Every year, more people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war.
- In developing countries, 70% of industrial wastes are dumped untreated into waters, polluting the available water supply locally and down steam.
- Over 2 Billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with feces from animals or humans, an indication that potentially very serious pathogens could be present in the water.
- Potentially harmful contaminants have been found in tap water of every US state.
“NOR ANY DROP TO DRINK” QUALITY SUMMARY
Overall, the quality of your water could be affected by a witches’ brew concoction from hundreds of possible contaminants.

The water purification process is essentially the removal or neutralization of contaminants in the source water that are detrimental to the intended use. Drinking water is the most widely desired intention, used not only for drinking, but also for cooking, cleaning and bathing.
The process begins with removal of the largest contaminate particles and then proceeds through stages of ever smaller particle removal. The contamination particles to be removed are measured in Microns = one millionth of a meter. A water molecule is .0001 Micron…one ten thousandth of a Micron…or about .000000004 inch.
