Even though the Earth has plenty of water, 97.5% of it is salt water, which is of course undrinkable without being desalinated.

Salt Water Pollution
It is estimated that over 80% of the world’s wastewater is mostly untreated and dumped back into the environment, polluting our lakes, streams and oceans.
Sewage entering the ocean pollutes it with pathogenic viruses, bacteria and protozoans which can cause e coli, giardia, cholera, hepatitis A, hepatitis E, etc.
In addition to pathogens, the seawater can be contaminated by at least 80 heavy metals, micro–plastic particles, toxic chemicals, animal waste, and garbage.

WHO estimates over 3.5 Million people die each year from water-related diseases.
Every year, more people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war.
In developing countries, 70% of industrial wastes are dumped untreated into waters, polluting the available water supply locally and downstream.
Over 2 Billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with feces from animals or humans.
Overall, water quality can be affected by hundreds of possible contaminants.

The process begins with removal of the largest contaminate particles and then proceeds through stages of ever smaller particle removal.
